In an increasingly internet-driven world, it is becomming more an more necessary to utilize the latest in techological advancements. One of those advancements is an emerging technology known as cloud computing. 
Cloud computing is internet-based computing that is powered by shared resources, software applications, and information. This is provided to computers and other devices on demand via a network that functions much like an electricity grid.
In other words, you could run an entire computer operating system - including applications - entirely in an online environment!
Cloud computing is significantly more cost effective than traditional computing, and is also much more reliable and secure.
Web hosting providers are turning toward cloud computing as a web hosting solution for businesses. Although it costs more than standard hosting options, the new industry is seeing a rapid growth trend. 2010 was the first (official) year for cloud hosting, and the demand for the the service is increasing.
Currently, cloud hosting costs are based on a pay-as-you-go platform. Some charge by the hour, and other by a variety of other means. Although cloud hosting is perfect for rapidly growing businesses, it is not ideal for small businesses that don't require heavy server usage.
Although cloud hosting technology is always evololving, it is likely that cloud hosting will soon become the popular choice for web hosting solutions.
